Mobile Breeding
Why would you send away your hembras and especially those fragile,
precious cria that you waited 11 months to nurture, when the country’s
leading herdsires can actually pay your girls a visit?
Despite “ Mobile
Mating “ being publicized in the
US ever since Mike Safley wrote an article about the Pucara
Mobile Breeding in Australia. US breeders have been resistant
to the idea. It is a widely used service in Australia with most
breeders offering the option. In fact some breeders do “ Australia
wide” runs traveling thousands of miles with their stable
of herdsires.

Jude and Al would love to see US breeders take a bit of notice and run with
it to see how effective it really is. By a combination of not wanting to
lose the time with the new born cria and an unswerving tendency to want to
own their “own“ stud male Jude and Al feel like US breeders are
doing their breeding programs irreparable harm. They end up using unproven
males, or herdsires they bought “at the right price“, or “young
Harry”, their first born, because of sentimental reasons.
Of course no one wants to send off their new born cria that they have waited
so long to be with. Months of waiting and suspense envelope a new cria’s
birth. Breeders want to care and nurture that cria during its most impressionable
and at risk time. So Al and Jude see a lot of breeders using stud males that
will not improve anyone’s breeding program because they will not send of their females with cria at foot. As Jude says, “Why on
earth would you buy a herdsire that will forever affect your herd quality when
you only have 3-4 years experience breeding alpacas? To make good breeding decisions
people have to understand genetics, know how to dissect pedigree and understand
matching one alpaca’s traits to another. They need to know breeding systems.”
“So often“ says Alan, “we see new breeders
buying phenotypically good looking herdsires that have poor pedigree.
And so often they select these to the strength of just the herdsire
in the pedigree and forget that a stud male needs prepotent genetics
from both dam and sire.” A herdsire will only throw to the
value of his genes, so if one of the parents is weak he will throw
back to that. It is an averaging effect. The whole problem for
less wealthy and smaller breeders is that the herdsires with impeccable
genetic and phenotypic quality are often out of their price range.
Often well over $100,000. But if a breeder buys a $25,000 or thereabouts
male it’s very likely someone else’s cull!
Mobile Mating helps these breeders. The Pucara males are proven.
Genetically superior. Display great phenotype. Have produced remarkable
cria. And in the case of the Studmaster and Alpaca Gain males have their progeny
tracked for production. And these boys can come to you at no extra
expense.
This is how it works :
- You call Pucara International after the birth of your cria
and arrange said breeding about 14-21 days after the birth. Of
course you have booked the breeding with a 25% down on the signing
of a breeding contract much earlier so we can schedule things.
- You make sure the female is receptive to a male, disease free,
has no infection and in the case of a maiden, you make sure the
hymen is perforated at least seven days before the mobile breeding
and also that she is receptive to a male.
- Jude and Al will consult with you which is the best herdsire
to use. They would like to get a history of fiber results, perhaps
a fiber sample, a copy of the ARI certificate and if possible
any information including pictures, if available, of previous
cria from the female including which males sired them.
- We assume the mobile breeding to be done is within a reasonable drive ( meaning a return trip can be done comfortably within a day's travel ) of Muddy
Valley Farm. Pucara
will drive further for group bookings but there may be travelling
costs involved and the need to be able to house the stud males
in a suitable risk free field with shelter.
- Discounts are available for multiple breedings and repeat
customers and also to “host“ farms who organize group
breedings.
- Then the day arrives. A pen area is required. The breeding
takes place. In 13 days the female will be checked for “spit
off” status by the owner. If the female is receptive, the
male will return on day 14. (A spit test can also be done at
day 7 which will indicate whether or not ovulation has taken
place. If she’s receptive it’s wise to arrange a
breeding as soon as possible as you are more likely to achieve
success at a different phase of her cycle.) However, if the female
does not conceive after the third visit, Pucara reserves the
right to bring that female back to Muddy Valley Farm for a veterinary
inspection and further breeding. If this option is not accepted
by the dam’s owner they will sacrifice 10% of the breeding
fee.
- It is the responsibility of the dam owner to carry out spit
tests and ultrasound exams in a time frame that’s agreed
to by both parties.
- If the female conceives, payment is due on a positive ultrasound
or 60 days after the effective mating, which ever comes first.
- Pucara offers a live birth guarantee for 48 hours after birth.
Thus the process is easy. It’s simple. You lose nothing.
There is no anxiety. All it involves is an hour chatting about
the affairs of the world with Al or Jude while the alpacas do all
the work. It may also require a good cup of tea!
