Fleece class

ALPACA SELECTION AND FIBER

Only held at Pucara International's Oregon farm.

Huacaya and Suri

A fun day OR weekend of instruction with heaps of hands on for both experienced and novice alpaca breeders. This is especially pertinent for people with no experience. We can offer different levels because we have the room, the fiber, the animals and instructors with experience to help. Includes lunch. Cost $65 per day or $100 for two days. $100 per couple per day.

Please understand if you want instruction in just one breed you do not have to go through the instruction relating to the other breed. You will receive more help with the breed of your choice. Likewise if you can only attend on one day that is possible.

SATURDAY: 10AM-4PM        UNDERSTANDING ALPACA FIBER

                          Huacaya and Suri

Morning class.....mostly theory, includes power point presentation, understanding fiber structure, histograms, biopsy and classing criteria. This will include looking at the AOBA fleece scoring card to understand how to analyse your show fleeces.

Jude will be instrumental in teaching this and the afternoon class using her Senior Judge and wool classing experience.

Afternoon class....hands on...grading and classing fiber....lots of personal guidance. This session will be held in the barn with a number of fleeces of both breeds to be analysed. You will get to see through an alpaca judges eyes how to grade fleeces and especially what it is that Pucara International sees as the fleeces of the future.

Sat. evening.... a few beers, some local wine and a barbie! Very low key!

SUNDAY: 9AM-3PM                     ALPACA SELECTION

                           Huacaya and Suri

Morning class.....theory on selection, traits and grading tables. Jude and Al guide the participants through both sessions. Having judged, sorted, classed and farmed tens of thousands of alpacas all over the world, they have a unique perspective that is driven from having alpacas as their only source of income since mid 1996!

They will show you in theory how to put together selection tools that will take the subjectivity out of choosing alpacas for purchase or for breeding.

Afternoon class..... hands on with animals, putting the theory to practice with lots of one on one tuition in the art of selecting alpacas and using your selction guide that you constructed in the morning class.

We guarantee that you'll be a better alpaca breeder once you finish these classes!
