We have been in a continual search for prepotent genetics that we can add to our herd and it has lead us to using herdsires from other alpaca farms to help develop the type of alpaca we want in the future. We want a herdsire who comes from proven lines. Not show winning lines, although ribbons make a nice marketing story but from a line that repeatedly produces desirable traits we look for.  Fineness, cutting weight, vitality to a fleece and especially correct conformation. We want luster plus in a suri, tight high frequency crimp in a huacaya. We especially want fertility and constitutional vigor.

We are not too proud to go and look for these qualities in our competitors herds!

And we are especially not too proud to introduce in our website  the herdsires from other breeders herds that we believe have the goods.

We choose these herdsires with some pretty simple theory. They must display the traits we like. They must come from a proven line that consistently produces those traits and or consistently produce those traits in offspring of their own. For instance Durango comes from some awesome lines we are very well aware of. He has had just a handful of cria BUT his parentage and what they have done is enough to tell us that this is a very controlled and tight line! The same applies to LCA Nautilus. Never be afraid to use a new herdsire form proven lines. Livestock research shows that it is always better to use the new herdsires from proven lines than the original sires because the genetics are more improved, tighter, less likely to be inconsistent. But also we use these original sires like Pperuvian Inca and Bruxo because we want not only their name but also the exact quality that each of these bring to a mating.

But in every case if we are using an “improved” herdsire a lot hinges on the quality of that animals dam and her ability in her past and parentage to see consistency. She and her parents must display a consistency of production. You only have to slip with one grandparent to get up to a 25% variation in an outcome. Everybody concentrates on the quality of the herdsire and in a herd sense its very important but if you want to produce elite alpaca stock you have to have quality through out a pedigree.
